CAN YOU GUESS THE GADGET?

October 18, 2017

Oh the fun to be had with things found in the bottoms of boxes.

This Friday, a friend approached my father with the above item. "Alan, do you know what this is? I found it in the bottom of a box lot I bought at an auction." he said. "No, I've never seen anything like it, but I know how to find out." And off to the market it went. After asking a few vendors in Ocean Pines to no avail, I caved and looked it up on the internet. For the rest of the week, we ran a game at each market offering a prize to anyone who knew it's purpose. Some of the responses were hilarious! So, before I tell you what it actually is, assuming of course that you don't already know, I will share some of the things customers and other vendors guessed. Enjoy the laugh.

Many of these answers were given by multiple people:
archery tool
millinery tool
leather working tool
something for untieing knots
2 pronged screwdriver
pickle fork
oyster shucker
mushroom picker
bottle open
tuning fork
head scratcher
for scraping poop off of shoes
medieval toothpick
wine cork remover
net making tool
measurement tool, particularly for body parts
horse shoe cleaner
nail puller
for picking out nut meats
can opener
cigar cutter
to stab someone you don't like
crab picker
fancy cheese fork
pair of pliers
shoe horn
for poking someone's eyes out
for cleaning paintbrushes
peach pitter
boat sail repair tool
to pull up railroad ties
nuclear submarine key
animal castration tool
and finally, at least four people said that it would be good for picking their nose...no I'm not kidding.

What is it actually? It's a heavy duty, brass divot repair tool for use on the golf course. That's right, it's for putting grass back into place...No wonder I didn't know what it was. I've never played golf.

A big thanks to all of our participants.

MAJOR MILESTONE AND IN THE NEWS AGAIN

October 6, 2017

Shipwrecked Seafood is now an approved shellfish shipper! That means starting Tuesday, you can get fresh oysters from us at your local market.

Meanwhile, the hard crab season ended rather abruptly this week as many crabbers switched their equipment over to tong for oysters. A few shedding operations are still running, so we will have soft crabs through this weekend.

In other news, this week was our first day at the Camden Ave. Market in Salisbury. We had a great time meeting new customers, while still trying to fit in the grocery shopping we usually do. Charles Paparella from Travels with Charlie on WBOC just happened to be at the market doing a story, so Shipwrecked Seafood is in the news again. Isn't free publicity the greatest? You can go here to watch the clip.

COMPANY TRIP

August 24, 2017

When you work with family, family trips and company trips are one and the same. We joined the multitude of travelers on the roads this week to go witness the solar eclipse. A very long overnight and all morning ride that included a stop in D.C. to pick up a friend, brought us to a parking lot in Manning South Carolina with just enough time for a picnic before the main event. It was worth it to see that bright white spiked ring surround the moon's silhouette; such a pity my cellphone camera didn't do it justice.
This weekend promises to be almost as busy as our trip made the last one. Dad and I will be in Ocean Pines Saturday as usual. Then we will get up a 3 am on Sunday and drive to our new spot at the Olney Market. Hope they like crabs up there as much as we do down here! Also, we now have a Facebook page. It's a bit sparse at the moment, but that should change soon, so like us  if your care to.

GREAT NEWS FOLLOWING A GREAT DOWNPOUR

August 14, 2017

This Saturday we felt as if we were in the middle of a monsoon. Water started forming rivers to the parking lot as you can see in the picture. What a wet one for the Eastern Shore! When the weather forcaster said morning showers he apparently meant thunderstorms with heavy downpours ;). Fortunately we had just bought a new tent on the way over and put it over the trailer to protect it from filling up with water. Crabs like to be wet, but fresh water kills them.

Before I deliver the great news, I have some sad news too. We will no longer be at our stand in Berlin. Our only recently built wooden stand will be coming down shortly and the flags will fly no longer. After a weekend of no Friday or Saturday Sales and little on Sunday last month, we moved over to the Ocean Pines Farmers Market on Saturdays with the intention of continuing in Berlin on Sundays. The weather didn't cooperate though and stock got scarce. Sorry Berlin, it just didn't work out, but we won't forget where we got our start. It's been fun!
So the good news: we've picked up our second farmers market. On Sunday's, starting weekend after this one coming, we will be making a long drive up the road to Olney, MD for their morning market. It will be a six hour round trip, but hopefully we will have enough sales to make up for all the gas. If it's anything like Ocean Pines, we'll do okay.

GREAT DAY AT THE MARKET

July 22, 2017

Wow, we nearly sold out today! Thank you to all 11 of our customers, most of whom were new. We will be back next week Ocean Pines.

On the not so bright side, the heat has really done a number on today's harvest. I'm afraid we just can't find enough stock to open up tomorrow. See you next week everyone.

THINGS ARE HEATING UP!

July 13, 2017

Did you see us on the news Fourth of July weekend!? Our reporter friend and his intern spent nearly 3 hours interviewing us and filming footage, all for that one minute blurb. I didn't realize just how much footage the evening new editors have to process in a day. Kudos to them!

WBOC wasn't the only one taking pictures. We snapped a few of the camera crew too.

How are things doing otherwise? Well, four more crabbers approached us last week in hopes of being suppliers. That means a steadier supply of crabs for you guys as sales increase. And sales are increasing, slowly. Last Friday we ran out of crabs five minutes after we opened, partly from a sudden customer rush and partly because there were not many crabs to buy on Thursday due to heavy rain.

This weekend is going to be dangerously hot, and stormy as well on Friday. Will we be there? I sure hope so! We will do our best to take the heat, but even I will have to take ac breaks tomorrow. So please be patient if one of us is missing for a few. Call ahead before you come just in case we get stormed out or collapse from the heat :). I foresee using lots of ice tomorrow, and not just to keep the crabs cool.
